The Special Edition model represents an enhancement over the standard KX-580, specifically engineered for audiophiles. While retaining the core mechanical design, the internal electronics received notable upgrades. These included the integration of Nichicon Muse capacitors for a purer audio signal, copper bus bars in the power supply to minimise electrical interference, and improved operational amplifiers to enhance sonic detail and clarity.

Key features of the KX-580 SE include a two-head, single-capstan configuration. It incorporates Dolby B, C, and S noise reduction, with Dolby S being a standout feature that delivers exceptional tape hiss reduction, approaching CD-like quality, typically found on more advanced three-head decks. The Dolby HX-Pro system optimises recording levels for high frequencies, preventing saturation, while the Play Trim control allows for fine-tuning of treble during playback. Furthermore, the Auto Tape Tuning function automatically calibrates the deck to the specific tape formulation being used.
