The Thorens TD 125 Mk II is a highly regarded belt-driven turntable, first introduced in 1972. It gained a reputation among audiophiles for its robust construction and effective vibration isolation. The design features a substantial cast metal chassis combined with a suspended sub-chassis system.
This model incorporates an electronically controlled motor for stable speed. The sub-chassis, a significant element weighing 7kg, is designed to isolate the platter, main bearing, and tonearm from motor vibrations and external disturbances. This isolation is further enhanced by a three-spring suspension system, creating a floating plinth effect.
The TD 125 Mk II offers electronic speed selection for 16, 33, and 45 RPM records, with a front-mounted control and a pitch adjustment strobe. A notable improvement over its predecessor is the integrated acceleration clutch, which helps to reduce start-up times and preserve the drive belt. This particular unit is fitted with the highly respected SME 3009 Series II Improved tonearm, which typically bypasses the turntable's integrated cueing mechanism.
