This Sony MDS-JE480 is a silver MiniDisc recorder, released by Sony around 2002. It represents a later generation of consumer MiniDisc decks, incorporating Sony's ATRAC DSP Type-S and MDLP technology. This enables significantly extended recording times on a single MiniDisc, offering up to four times the standard capacity.

The unit employs ATRAC / ATRAC3 generation Type-S processing alongside a 24-bit Hybrid Pulse A/D converter to ensure high-quality audio conversion. A notable feature is the 'Time Machine Recording' function, which utilises a 6-second buffer. This allows for the capture of audio that occurred just before the record button was pressed, preventing missed moments.

The MDS-JE480 also provides a range of editing options directly on the unit, including track division and combination, along with undo functionality and Scale Factor Edit. This makes it straightforward to customise and manage audio recordings.
