This turntable was designed as a modular unit, meaning the plinth and tonearm are separate components. This approach allows users to select a plinth material, such as wood, slate, or composite, to effectively dampen vibrations and minimise motor noise, which is particularly important for its powerful idler-drive motor.

Historically, the Model 401 was often paired with tonearms like the SME 3009, but it also accommodates many contemporary high-fidelity tonearms, enabling users to tailor its sound to their preferences.
