The B&W 805 Matrix are highly respected two-way standmount loudspeakers, originally produced by Bowers & Wilkins between 1990 and 1997. As the entry model to the esteemed Matrix 800 series of their time, they delivered professional studio monitoring technologies within a more compact design suitable for home use. These speakers feature a bass-reflex enclosure incorporating B&W's distinctive Matrix internal bracing. This cross-braced cellular structure is designed to minimise cabinet resonance and colouration, allowing for a cleaner sound. The driver complement consists of a 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter, mounted separately on top, and a 6.5-inch woven Kevlar mid-bass driver. While capable of a tight and precise low-end, the 805 Matrix offers limited deep bass extension in its standard configuration. An optional external Bass Alignment Filter (BAF) was available, which, when used with an amplifier's effects loop, could extend the flat bass response further. The sound signature is known for its detailed imaging, precise instrument placement, and a transparent, analytical midrange and treble. Careful system matching is often recommended to complement their uncoloured presentation.
