The Acoustic Energy AE1 Classic Bookshelf Speakers represent a significant piece of hi-fi history, first appearing in 1987. These compact monitors were designed to offer exceptional dynamic range and precision, delivering a surprisingly powerful bass response from their small enclosures. A key innovation of the AE1 was the use of all-metal drivers. This included spun aluminium for the bass/mid driver and tweeter, a departure from typical materials at the time. To further enhance sonic purity, the cabinets were internally lined with a dense, concrete-based material. This construction minimised cabinet resonance, contributing to the speakers' substantial weight and acoustic integrity. The AE1 was conceived as a counterpoint to other popular compact speakers of the era, specifically aiming to provide superior bass extension, wider dynamics, and greater power handling compared to models known more for their mid-range focus.
